The return of a numbered WGP event to Argentina after four and a half years was historic. On a night of a packed gym and a lot of celebration from the fans in the capital Buenos Aires, this Saturday, April 27, the event crowned the champion of the Super-Lightweights Tomas Chacal with yet another title defense. In the rematch granted to Ignacio El Fino, the audience saw a very exciting fight that was contested until the last second of the fifth round. After a great performance, Chacal won the duel by unanimous decision. Other two major highlights of the night were the spectacular knockouts by Marcos Rios and Fernando Amaya, both with beautiful high kicks. The former beat compatriot Facu Suarez and the latter dispatched the Brazilian Ravy Brunow.
But the night was not just about defeat for the Brazilians, who had two great victories on the main card. In the co-main event, Jones Coliseu had a great performance and beat Metralleta Torino by unanimous decision. Lucas Rafael also proved he came to stay and defeated Rodrigo Fernandez, also by unanimous decision. The next edition of the WGP takes place on May 19, in Brasília, featuring the Lightweight title fight between champion Renzo Martinez and challenger Cabelo Monteiro.
New fight and same result to maintain the title with Tomas Chacal
The most important fight of WGP 74 had the atmosphere of a soccer stadium. In a highly anticipated rematch, both fanbases put on a show at the Microestadio de Platense, in Buenos Aires. And the fighters lived up to the occasion in the ring. Champion Tomas Chacal and challenger Ignacio El Fino faced each other for the second time and delivered a true battle once again. With his usual intensity, Chacal went for it and managed a knockdown in the second round while Fino focused on counterattacks. Starting from the third round, the champion showed his usual stamina and continued to take charge of the fight, but the challenger showed why he made it to this fight again, managing to even the contest at various moments. But it was not enough; another victory and title retention for Tomas Chacal. What an incredible fight between the two Argentinians.
Victories for Brazilians and incredible knockouts by Argentinians
In the co-main event of the night, the most important duel among matches between Brazilians and Argentinians took place. Jones Coliseu and Metralleta Torino faced off in the ring and staged a war. With a highly contested fight, both alternating good moments, the decision came down to details. With more aggressiveness, Jones claimed victory by unanimous decision. The fight between the Argentinians Marcos Rios and Facu Suarez lived up to the expectations of the audience present at the gym in Buenos Aires. Recognized as two of the best in the category, the fight excited the crowd with the brilliant performance of Marcos, who landed a beautiful head kick and achieved a knockout in the second round.
In yet another duel between Brazil vs Argentina, Fernando Amaya and Ravy Brunow caused quite a stir at the Microestadio de Platense. This was because Argentine Amaya landed a spectacular kick in the first round, putting the Brazilian on the canvas and ending the fight with a magnificent finish. While in the second fight of the main card Argentina came out on top, in the opener of the main fights, Brazilian Lucas Rafael faced off against Argentine Rodrigo Fernandez in search of solidifying his place in the Super-Middleweight division. And he did well. After three intense rounds of constant movement, he won by unanimous decision, creating a true anticlimax in the gym in Buenos Aires.
The clash between Argentine Angel Bauza and Paraguayan Guido Cardozo was a true rout by Bauza. He dominated from the start and achieved a beautiful knockout in the second round. WGP 74 also featured two women's fights, one of which drove the crowd wild. The clash between Camilla Fillipini and Maria Ferreira was completely insane, with both athletes being very aggressive and staging an epic duel. At the end of the three rounds, Camilla prevailed, having achieved two knockdowns and winning by unanimous decision. Meanwhile, the match between Belen Cabrera and Marylin Contin excited the crowd less in a highly tactical fight, with victory for Belen by split decision.
The fight between Paraguayan Teodoro Ruiz and Argentine Nahuel Spider was a true war. After three insane rounds, Ruiz came out on top by unanimous decision for being far more effective and aggressive. The bout between Enzo Sanchez and Ivan Del Vecchio was the most subdued among the Super Fights. After much balance and study, Enzo edged the victory by split decision.
The Undercard of WGP 74 also energized the crowd at the Microestadio de Platense. The fight between Luciano Romero and Anthony Guzman was the highlight of the prelim fights, with high intensity and free-flowing exchanges. Damian Riquelme was also another highlight, winning against Zurdo Dapueto by knockout after his opponent suffered a foot injury. Another duel that ignited the gym was the match that closed the Undercard between Santiago Ricci and Alex Tyson, where Tyson won by split decision. The other winners of the night were Ivan Villalba, Ezequiel Perez, and Favio Valiente.
